Who we are
Anime Guider (animeguider.com) is an anime tracking, review, and discovery platform. This policy covers the website and the Anime Guider mobile app (com.animeguider.app) — the app is the same service delivered in an app shell, so everything below applies identically to both. What we collect
- Account data— email address, username, and a password (stored only as a secure hash by our authentication provider; we never see it). If you sign in with Google or Discord, we receive your email and basic profile from them. If you arrive via a referral or campaign link, we store that link's code with your account to credit the referrer.
- Date of birth — collected once at signup to apply age-appropriate content restrictions. It is never shown to other users and is not used for anything else.
- Optional profile data — avatar image, bio, and (only if you enable SMS episode alerts) a phone number.
- Activity — the anime you track, ratings, reviews, comments, lists, follows, friend requests, and direct messages you send on the platform.
- Payment status — your subscription tier and a Stripe customer reference. Card numbers go directly to Stripe and never touch our servers.
- Anime Oracle conversations— if you use the Oracle, your chat messages and its replies are stored with your account so you can revisit them; they're deleted with your account.
- Push notification subscriptions — if you enable browser push, we store the delivery endpoint your browser issues plus its user-agent string (browser/device type, used to debug delivery). Removed when you turn push off or delete your account.
- Technical data — session cookies needed to keep you signed in, standard server logs (IP address, browser type) kept by our hosting provider for security and debugging, and an internal error log (kept 90 days) that may include the URL and technical details of a failed request.
How we use it
- Running the features you use — tracking, reviews, lists, messaging.
- Age-appropriate filtering: accounts under 18 automatically have mature content hidden across the site.
- Personalization: your ratings power your recommendations and the taste-compatibility scores other members see next to your profile.
- Notifications you opt into — new-episode emails or SMS. You can turn these off any time in Settings.
- Safety: reviews and comments are screened by automated moderation (see processors below) and can be reported by other users.
We do not sell your personal data, and we never will.
Who processes it for us
- Supabase — database, authentication, and file storage (avatars).
- Vercel — hosting and server logs, plus privacy-friendly, cookieless usage analytics.
- Google Analytics — when enabled, uses first-party cookies (e.g.
_ga) to measure traffic and usage patterns (pages viewed, approximate location, device) via a random identifier assigned to your browser — not your name or email. Google retains this data for up to 14 months. In the EEA, UK and Switzerland these cookies are only set after you accept our cookie banner; everywhere else you can opt out site-wide with Google's browser add-on. - Stripe — subscription payments and billing management.
- Resend (email) and Twilio (SMS) — deliver the episode notifications you opt into.
- OpenAI — automated moderation screening of review and comment text at the moment you submit it, and, if you use the Anime Oracle, your message plus a summary of your anime taste (favourite genres and a few of your top-rated titles) so it can make recommendations. Only that content is sent; no email, real name, or other account identifiers. OpenAI processes API data under its API data-usage policy (not used to train their models; retained briefly for abuse monitoring). Your Oracle conversations are also stored in our own database — see "What we collect".
- AniListand other anime-metadata services — provide show information. Your searches on the browse page are sent to AniList's public API from your browser; no Anime Guider account data is attached.
- YouTube — trailer players are embedded in privacy-enhanced mode (youtube-nocookie.com), which does not set cookies until you actually play a video.
- Google AdSense — when advertising is active, Google may use cookies to serve and personalize ads. You can opt out of personalized ads at adssettings.google.com. See how Google uses data from partner sites.
Legal bases & retention
Where GDPR applies, we process your data on these legal bases: performance of a contract for the core service (account, tracking, reviews, messaging, subscriptions); consent for optional things you switch on (analytics cookies via the cookie banner, episode notifications, SMS, push); and legitimate interests for security, fraud prevention, and moderation.
How long we keep things:
- Your account & content (profile, tracking, reviews, lists, messages, Oracle conversations, push subscriptions) — for as long as the account exists; removed immediately when you delete it.
- Feedback you submitted — kept after account deletion but anonymized (unlinked from any account).
- Internal error logs — 90 days, then deleted automatically.
- Hosting server logs — a short rolling window, per our hosting provider.
- Google Analytics — expires after 14 months.
- Billing records — when you delete your account we cancel your subscription and delete your Stripe customer profile; the immutable transaction records tax law requires are retained by Stripe per its own policy.
International transfers
Our processors (Supabase, Vercel, Google, Stripe, OpenAI, Twilio, Resend) operate primarily in the United States. Where your data is transferred out of the EEA/UK, it is protected by the EU-U.S. Data Privacy Framework and/or Standard Contractual Clauses maintained by each processor.
Cookies & local storage
We set essential cookies to keep your session signed in — the site cannot work without them. Small UI preferences (like a dismissed banner) are stored in your browser's local storage and never leave your device. Advertising cookies, when ads are active, are set by Google as described above.
Your rights & deleting your data
You can delete your account and all associated data yourself, any time, from Settings → Delete account or the dedicated account deletion page — it takes effect immediately and removes your profile, tracking history, reviews, comments, lists, messages, and friendships, and cancels any active subscription.
You can also download a complete copy of your data (JSON) any time from Settings → Your data → Download my data. The export covers every category listed under "What we collect": your profile, anime tracking, reviews, comments, likes, lists, follows and friend requests, messages you sent, notification settings and history, Oracle conversations, feedback, anime suggestions, and push subscriptions.
You can also access, correct, export, or delete your data — and object to or ask us to restrict processing — by emailing contact@animeguider.com from your account email; we'll handle it within 30 days. If you are in the EU/EEA or UK you also have the right to lodge a complaint with your local supervisory authority. These rights are backed by GDPR/CCPA where they apply, and we honor them for everyone regardless of location.
Children
Anime Guider requires users to be at least 13 years old. We do not knowingly collect data from children under 13: signup rejects under-13 birth dates, and if an existing account reports an under-13 date of birth — or we otherwise learn an account belongs to a child under 13 — the account and its data are deleted.
- Accounts aged 13–17 automatically have mature content hidden, a stricter language filter applied, and no ads shown. Analytics applies to them the same as to adults (subject to the same regional consent rules).
- Teens manage their own notification settings (email/SMS/push are all off by default except email, and can be turned off any time).
- Parents and guardians can request access to, or deletion of, their minor child's account and data by emailing contact@animeguider.com. Where the law of your country requires parental consent for a minor's data processing, the parent or guardian may exercise these rights on the minor's behalf.
Security
All traffic is encrypted in transit (HTTPS). Database access is protected by row-level security so users can only read and write what they are allowed to. Passwords are hashed by our authentication provider and are never visible to us.
Changes
