True love deconstructed and reborn brighter than ever; a modern fairy tale masterpiece.

Let's roll back the clock to the very beginning of 2026. It's January, the new anime season is well under way, and Netflix releases a little movie called Cosmic Princess Kaguya that proceeds to take the anime world by storm. It's an adaptation of a fairy tale, but with three key choices, it makes th…

Lara's journey through life conveyed a feeling of nostalgia and sweetness, but there's also bittersweet and sadness.

_This review contains some spoilers._ Sayonara Lara is Kinema Citrus' anniversary project. And truly, it's a title that, in my opinion, is perfect for that purpose. The anime is steeped in nostalgia, from the art style and the use of cel animation in the opening to the adaptation of a fairy tale in…

A bittersweet fairy tale about learning to live for yourself

Sayonara Lara initially appears as a straightforward reinterpretation of The Little Mermaid, but by the end, I believe it delves much deeper into the essence of living rather than solely focusing on finding “true love.” Lara’s struggles extend beyond the challenge of finding a romantic partner. Her…

Through Lara's Pursuit of True Love, Sayonara Lara Proves Why We Need More Anime Like This!

Every once in a while, there will be an anime that will begin airing and will immediately stick out as something truly unique against the seasonals that release alongside it. As soon as I watched the trailer for Sayonara Lara a few months back, I knew that it would be one I could absolutely not miss…

A fascinatingly fresh look at love, with incredible production to boot

When I first loaded up __Sayonara Lara__, it was initially out of just wanting to fill out my summer 2026 anime roster. I thought “why not, sounds interesting”. What I ended up getting was something that absolutely blew me out of the water, pun intended. I went into it with the simple expectation of…

A beautiful story about love, identity, freedom, and breaking the cycle of expectations.

Goodbye, Lara was honestly much deeper than I expected. I went into it thinking I was going to get a simple mermaid love story, but the more the story progressed, the more I started noticing the themes about love, family expectations, identity, trauma, and what it actually means to live for yourself…

This tale of love is hard to not love.

Many of us know the story of The Little Mermaid; a mermaid princess rescues and falls in love with a human prince, is given human legs by a sea witch in exchange for her voice, and is turned into sea foam after failing to win the prince's heart. If you're confused by that last part, it might be beca…

not every goodbye is an ending

> “love is patient, love is kind. it does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud.” -- 1 Corinthians 13:4 the discourse around *Goodbye, Lara* was patient for about three episodes. *this review contains spoilers* the anime is called *Goodbye, Lara*. the title hints from the jump that at some…
